Making our voices heard!

We have increasingly good opportunities to input into consultations and resource development through online platforms, check out the links below to make your voice heard!

1. With the demise of the WELL program and its replacement by the Industry Skills Fund there are ongoing opportunities for input through the consultation process that will continue until this is fully rolled out. It is really important for experienced WELL people to have say in this to try and ensure that the ISF is a worthy replacement. You can access the discussion paper and provide feedback through the Industry Skills Fund page

2. There is currently a great opportunity for input into new content for the “Building Strength with Numeracy” resources that Beth Marr will be developing for VALBEC. The Service Skills Australia website has more information in their “Taking the Lead Newsletter

Useful links and resources August 2014

Service Skills Australia has a new webpage “Taking the Lead” which it describes as a “one-stop shop” for information on the development of core LLN skills in the service industries.

Several of the Industry Skills Councils have developed resources relating to Foundation Skills in their industry areas. These may be useful to anyone delivering LLN in an industry context eg CAVSS, USIQ or WELL (soon to be replaced by the new Industry Skills Fund). They include the following free resources:

Construction and Property Services – Foundation Skills Resources for CPC08 and CPP07

Agrifood Skills Australia – Two LLN resources “From the Ground Up” and “The Get Real Factor”

Community Services & Health Industry Skills Council – a series of videos on LLN Awareness & Foundation Skills Implementation

Government Skills Australia – a series of videos on Foundation Skills in a government and community context

Conferences ahead!

Registration is still open for this year’s 2013 Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) Conference “Local Practices Global Contexts” to be held in Sydney from September 30th to October 2nd

If you are looking for opportunities to attend a conference that is totally free without having to travel at all from the comfort of home then explore the Reform Symposium e-Conference. This is a cross-sectoral global online conference (using BlackboardCollaborate) that runs for three days. For us the dates are Saturday 10th October to Monday 14th of October and in our TimeZone (TZ) the sessions run overnight from evening to morning.  There are sessions to suit all educators and recordings are available later if something you are really interested is in the middle of our night. Many but not all, of the sessions are about technology as tool for learning. There will be many concurrent sessions (including some by Aussie educators and many by ESL specialists). Some of the best known connected educators in the world are presenting Keynotes.

For anyone with the urge to travel registration is also open for the 2013 US Conference on Adult Literacy “Together, leading change” is being held October 31st  to November 2nd in Washington, D.C.

Also coming up – there are no details on the website yet, is the next Australian WELL Practitioners’ Conference this has been postponed from November and will now take place in Hobart on the 19th, 20th and 21st of March 2014. Watch the events page on the WELL website for further updates.

The next Western Australian Adult Literacy Council state conference is planned for April 2015.  That’s a different time of the year than usual and there won’t be one in 2014.

Training rangers in the Kimberley: a WELL project

Over the past four years, Kimberley Training Institute (KTI) has delivered an innovative Conservation and Land Management (CLM) training program to Aboriginal rangers in remote areas of the Kimberley.

Over the past 18 months KTI has successfully used Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) funding to assist rangers in developing their literacy and numeracy skills,

resulting in improved completions of Traineeships, progressions to higher level qualifications, and increased employment opportunities.

Further one-on-one tutoring support is provided by KTI lecturers under the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS).

This program is a great example of co-delivery between LLN specialist and vocational lecturers. KTI is currently in the running for the Premiers Award.

Good luck!
