Collaborative Numeracy program Take 2

Beth Marr will be returning to Western Australia in late February to start a second set of workshops developing teacher’s skills to apply collaborative learning techniques to adults learning numeracy.

The 2014 pilot program will form the basis for  a series of videos.   Whether you need to refresh your skills and re-visit the concepts, or start learning about the ideas from scratch, the videos will allow you to do this in your own time and place. Sorry, but 2015 program participants will not get the chance to be in a video!

I would love to hear from anyone who has tried some of the models of activity that Beth taught us last year – you can comment here publicly so the whole world can see if they wish or, if you prefer,  in our membership-only ALaN Network Google Group.

More of Beth’s work is available at “Building Strength With Numeracy” on the VALBEC website.

Let me know if you missed out on a place in the program. There are still a couple of spots available.

Making our voices heard!

We have increasingly good opportunities to input into consultations and resource development through online platforms, check out the links below to make your voice heard!

1. With the demise of the WELL program and its replacement by the Industry Skills Fund there are ongoing opportunities for input through the consultation process that will continue until this is fully rolled out. It is really important for experienced WELL people to have say in this to try and ensure that the ISF is a worthy replacement. You can access the discussion paper and provide feedback through the Industry Skills Fund page

2. There is currently a great opportunity for input into new content for the “Building Strength with Numeracy” resources that Beth Marr will be developing for VALBEC. The Service Skills Australia website has more information in their “Taking the Lead Newsletter

PD coming up and continuing April 2014

PD within the WA ALaN network

The face-to-face Collaborative Numeracy workshops with Beth Marr are continuing on 14-15 May. Beth is also delivering an in house program for Centacare during April and plans are under way for another two day workshop soon.

The “What’s in a number!” project continues and is due to finish in May. Checkout the recent posts on “Estimation”  then on  “Percentages”   and the most recent on “Exponents” and catch up with any others you have missed. Don’t forget to check out the comments and feedback and add your own!

Other PD

Coming up from IBSA/Velg are “Foundation Skills Workshops for VET Practitioners”  the Perth one is on June 4th – NOTE that the target audience for these is NOT LLN/Foundation Skills specialists but VET practitioners. However they may be relevant for others in your organisation. As we already use CAVSS here in WA to support vocational learners through team teaching, these workshops which have a focus on identifying foundation skills in units and then using the Foundation Skills (FSK) Training Package are perhaps less relevant to our VET practitioners than they would be elsewhere.

If you are joining the Face-to-face numeracy workshops with Beth Marr (application process now complete) you can still apply for travel support to attend but applications close very soon at 10:00am Tuesday 4th of March. Application forms are available on the GoogleGroup in a post entitled “Adult Literacy Sponsorship Program (WA)”

The “What’s in a number!” project is still in progress with the most recent blog post being the last of three about algebra: “Using letters instead of numbers – Part 3”. If you haven’t visited for a while there have been continuing posts over the summer except for a couple of weeks over Christmas so you might want to catch up by going to the “What’s in a number” blog and scrolling back through the posts, Don’t forget to check out the comments and feedback and add your own!

This year’s Teach Me Grammar is getting underway with Friday workshops. Check out the GoogleGroup and if you are intersted but have not yet said so then let Cheryl know because there may be another “run” starting in July.

PD coming up/continuing next year

PD within the WA ALaN network

Project still in progress.

“What’s in a number!” has changed focus from webinars to blog posting and is getting some increased participation through comments. Pressure of work for everyone at this time of year has been a problem raised by several people in respect of finding time to take part. The current post is on “Time”  so if you can make the TIME please read the post and add your comments. There will be one more post before Christmas – intended to be about “Date”.

If you are interested in Teach Me Grammar checkout the GoogleGroup and even if it is past the deadline for applications register your interest because there may be the potential for additional “runs” if there is sufficient interest.

Update on available PD

Project still in progress.

“What’s in a number!” is changing focus from webinars to blog posting. Input requested due to low webinar numbers has indicated that time pressure is too great at the moment for people to commit to webinar participation hence the change to blog posts and comments in order to keep the conversation going. The first topic is “Number”

“Adult Literacy and Numeracy Professional Development Workshops” at  Kimberley Training Institute are continuing through September, October and November with sessions focussing on the TAELLN401A, and on grammar (strategies for teaching, and enhancing business writing skills).

For more information, or to become a participant in any of these, visit the network GoogleGroup (if you aren’t a member see this page on how to join) and check out the posts.
